Drug Use and Depression

People who are caught in the grips of depression tend to stop thinking rationally and turn to drug and alcohol use as a way to numb their pain. Symptoms of depression are obvious, they include: mood swings, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, a disinterest about life in general. However when depression is coupled with drug use it is harder for outsiders to understand what is going on with the suffered.

People who start doing drugs while depressed experience serious mood swings with possible violent or aggressive outbursts, paranoia and periods in which they appear happy or manic.

Instead of helping depression, drug use further alters the brain's imbalanced chemistry making it harder to treat and harder to recover. Once a person has begun to use drugs to the point of excess, it is imperative that he/she receives treatment immediately. Hospitals, treatment centers and clinics can begin the treatment process, however places that specialize in treating co-occurring illness are the best choice. If you or someone you love is suffering from the pains of depression and are also a drug user or abuser, we know exactly where you are.
